Johan is now only 3 behind Kyle Lohse!

"It was a battle for him today," Gardenhire said. "I don't think he had his best pitches, but he battled his tail off and our guys picked him up."

I know this isn't a direct Gardy quote, but I thought I'd throw it on here because it was in Souhan's column and appears to pay indirect homage to this site:

<i>Then Gardenhire sprinted off the mound, and Silva pitched, as the prevalent Gardy-ism would have it, "his tail off."</i>

Hear ye! Hear ye! Bartlett plays his tail off!

http://tinyurl.com/l5vw4

"This is how everybody told me he played in the Minor Leagues," Gardenhire said. "My whole goal for this year was to get him to be the same person, with energy and life, and play with no fear. We envisioned him being a very good player, and he's playing his tail off. He's playing the way we hoped he would play."

Bartlett needs to battle his tail off a lot more. He's playing his tail off plenty, but where is the battling.

No tail, but battle nonetheless:

"Silva was OK today," Gardenhire said. "He battled through five innings. This club makes you work."

The GROUNDS CREW working their tails off... I'm sure they would have battled if given the opportunity:

Gard[enhire] said the soft spot in the turf near first base has been fixed by the Dome grounds crew. The coaching staff's argument that the soft spot would cause baserunning problems was strengthened on Friday when Josh Rabe slipped while trying to steal second base.

"They worked their tails off on it," Gard[enhire] said. "I walked over there, and they have done everything they can do to firm it back up. It was like a beach [Friday], and they went out and worked on it."

http://www.startribune.com/509/story/583396.html

Score one for the grounds crew!

Childress on Chester taylor..

First-year head coach The Bald Eagle won't go quite that far. "Chester has got to go out and carry the ball 24 times and then work his tail off to get back to Wednesday,'' Childress said, sitting in a golf cart after the second practice.

From Sid's column today:

Twins manager Burl Ives said now that Ford is healthy after being on the disabled list, he'll be used in a variety of ways. Ford went 2-for-5 against Cleveland on Wednesday night.

"He is a good defensive player and he bangs the ball around and hustles his tail off," Gardenhire said. "We'll mix him up and give guys a spell and he'd be good late in the ballgame for pinch-running situations where maybe we can steal a base with him and he can do a lot of things as one of our extra outfielders. He's valuable because he can play all the outfield positions and is, like I said, a good pinch runner. He's got a short swing and if he can swing at good pitches, he does pretty good."
If Twins can't re-sign Hunter, plans are to trade, sign a FA or go in-house to find a replacement.

Gordon: Absolutely right. But as you and I have seen firsthand all year, nobody's done more on the fly during the season to change the direction of his team than Gardenhire. In fact, because of performance issues and injuries, he's had to change almost half of his team on the run this year. And the result has been the best record in baseball since the first week in June. Leyland's done a lot, but Gardy gets my vote.

Jason: Who's the homer now? What, did you leave an apple on his desk this morning, Gardo?

Gordon: Quit trying to stir stuff up.

Jason: I'm just battling my tail off writing this column and expressing my opinion.

Gordon: I got your expression for you right here. Look, Red Smith, let's get back to the point here. We've got one award left: Rookie of the Year. Fragile Frankie Liriano might have been the most dominating rookie this year, even though he wound up missing the last two months. But it probably comes down to Detroit's Justin Verlander (17-9) and the Angels' Jered Weaver, who was 11-2 with a 2.32 earned-run average going into his last start.

Why I still have hope for this series:

"We've been backed up before," Twins manager Burl Ives said. "We've been told 'you're done' before. That's not something that this team takes too lightly. We'll come out and battle. We'll give them everything we have."

He had one after the last playoff game.

"They're playing their tails off," Gardenhire said of the Royals.
http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincitie ... 412031.htm

"When we got down in the first half, they said we were out of it," Gardenhire said. "I think we played as good as anybody in the second half. Ran off (11) in a row at the end of the year to win a pennant. I'm proud of those guys. They played their tails off."

"We pitched our tails our tails off -- they did too -- we just missed so many opportunities," Twins manager Burl Ives said. "We've been going through these struggles. The guys are trying, it's just not happening."

The 2007 season is not yet upon us and the battling is already beginning. Twins closer save specialist Joe Nathan on new pitcher Sidney Ponson:

"I think this organization for sure can get him back to form, and he's a guy that wants the ball, he's never going to say he doesn't want the ball, and he's going to go out there and battle, and you're going to have to rip the ball out of his hand,"

Congrats Sidney!!

After the game, Gardenhire blamed himself for the final home run. He knew that he should have taken his starter out before that pitch.

"That man will take the ball and pitch forever if he could," Gardenhire said of Ponson. "I knew Matty didn't have good numbers against A-Rod, but that was stupid, leaving [Ponson] in. Ponson had battled his tail off, and I should have taken him out."

Welcome to the club, Jeff Cirillo.

"He's a professional hitter and he battled and battled some tough pitches off," Twins manager Burl Ives said of Cirillo. "We sent the runners, knowing he was going to make contact. He had a great at-bat and ended up drawing a walk there. The rest of the guys tapped a couple here and got them in. But that was probably the biggest at-bat of the night. That's what we brought him over here for, because he has those at-bats"
If Twins can't re-sign Hunter, plans are to trade, sign a FA or go in-house to find a replacement.

Gardy on BOOF! from Sunday night:

He didn't have great stuff tonight, but he battled through it," Gardenhire said. "That's a great lineup and a great team over there. And you have to make a lot of pitches. He got through five and our bullpen did a great job carrying us the rest of the way."

"Johan's been pitching his tail off, and we finally came through for him," manager Burl Ives said. "I don't want to slight anybody, but I believe he's the best pitcher in this league."

BOOF! nominated himself after Wednesday's game:

"I battled today," Bonser said. "I didn't really have much command of everything, but I kept the team in the game and we pulled out another win."

ladies and gentlemen.....

Mega-Hunk Joe Mauer ran the bases Monday but continued to feel tightness in his strained left quadriceps muscle.

The Twins had hoped he'd be ready to play against the White Sox, but with an open date Thursday, it's looking more like Friday.

"That could be a target date, barring a setback on the bases, but he feels really good," Gardenhire said. "He's working his tail off to get there. It's still there a little bit, and maybe as he stretches it out a little more, running harder and harder, he'll be past it all."

Watkins battled his tail off for 10 years

Postby Babe The Blue Ox on Thu Aug 09, 2007 9:51 pm

Burl on Watkins (who?):

"He is a good kid," Gardenhire said. "He has worked very, very hard and bucked the odds and went from being one of these organizational guys awhile back and people saying that he is going to make a great coach, to being here in the big leagues, because he presevered and worked his tail off. He got better and better and that is fun to watch. That doesn't happen very often, but it is fun to watch."

Torii on battling

"The only way you are going to get to the playoffs, and the only way you're going to win in the playoffs, is by doing the small things," center fielder Torii Hunter said. "If you make little mistakes and mental errors, you're not going to win."

"All we can do is keep battling. I don't think there is a team out there that gives up."

This is one amazing article...

Kelly Thesier wrote:If there is one individual player who has seemed to represent the Twins' battle to stay in the division race, it's Jake Taylor.
Kelly Thesier wrote:The catcher has battled through a myriad of injuries this season, including two fingers that likely are broken, to be there whenever the club needs him.
Kelly Thesier wrote:It seemed like the plan would work as the back-up catcher battled his way through an 11-pitch at-bat against right-hander Rafael Betancourt to get to a 3-2 count.
Burl Ives wrote:"It was a tough night for us, but we battled pretty hard."
Jake Taylor wrote:"I've never felt anything like that. A 3-2 count, I was trying to battle there. I just couldn't...it was too much, I couldn't do it."
"Maybe you could go grab a bat and ball… and learn something. Maybe you will get it."

Does that mean he's finally shed the underdog role?

Not according to Blackburn.

"My entire career, I've had to battle with being an under-the-radar type of guy," said the 26-year-old. "It's always been a bit more motivation for me to go and prove people wrong. I don't ever expect anything, and it forces me to try and earn people's respect. So I don't see that changing."
